So last night I did something a little different. I was asked to pop down to my local Fire Station to do a portrait of the crew, something they haven’t done since 2007 and they have had a few additions since then!
“Newton Abbot is a retained station which means the firefighters all have other employment and are summoned to the station by pocket alerter, and are on call 24 hours a day 7 days a week. We attend a 2 hour training session every Monday evening, between 19:00 and 21:00 hours and attend school fetes and carnivals, we also undertake Community Fire Safety, fitting of smoke alarms and giving fire safety advice and school talks, we regularly take part in Exercise’s to keep up our core key skills.
Sometimes we hold open day’s which are very popular with the community and put on drill displays including ladder and pump drills.
Newton Abbot station is one of the busiest retained station’s in Devon & Somerset”
Having 21 Firefighters staring at me was not in the least bit intimidating…
